Composite Decking Is The Future

We’ve got a lot of time on our hands now, with the recent pandemic we’re dealing with. Some haven’t got a lot going on while sitting at home, and we figured, we’d provide as many articles as possible to spur some ideas into your noggin while we wait for things to improve. Why not consider making a list of things you want to do with your home while we wait this out? Today I want to focus on the efficient material: Composite Decking.

Before we get into this, you may ask, “What’s Composite Decking? This type of decking is a newer form of the natural wood. It uses a blend of wood mixed with plastics. The cost is higher than your typical natural plank, but for good reason. Before you get concerned about the plastics in use on these decks, be aware that they use a lot of recycled plastics in them as well as a blend of either sawdust, wood chips or wood fiber pieces. The decking comes in multiple styles and colors to fit the need of your home style and preference.

Let’s hit you with the list, I like lists, you should too! Here are 5 reasons the Composite Decking is becoming a popular home choice.

  1. Durability

  2. Low-maintenance

  3. Aesthetics

  4. Sustainability

  5. Value

1. Durability

Think of this decking as that big buff guy at the gym who out lifts you (maybe not, maybe you are tougher than you look!) This decking doesn’t budge for anyone. It’s made to last, it won’t warp, lose color, stain, and is even resistant to scratches. Imagine not having to replace these guys for years to come because of this. The decking is also known to be splinter free, and honestly, this might be my favorite thing about them, I am not a fan of an unexpected sliver! The durability is one reason why the cost may be worth it. Did we mention most of these deck boards are also insect proof? Termites Keep Out.

2. Low-maintenance

“Honey it’s that time of year again, I have to pressure wash the deck!” That line? Say it no more, the composite decking offers a lot less maintenance to look as good as it did on day one. Because of factors mentioned in the paragraph above, there is no need for staining, sanding or repainting this deck. The plastic coat keeps the colors in and everything else out. The most you will have to do is hit the deck with a clean brush of soap and water. Phew, that was hard work, lemonade or tea sounds good right about now.

3. Aesthetics

Are you concerned if these boards will look good with your home? The decking comes in many colorways and that fit the needs of your style and preference. There are color options such as wooded reds, monotone grays, natural cherry and more. The decking looks smooth and has a natural grain look to it, as well as a smoothed out texture that feels natural without the splinters. Thinking about adding in some other things like railing or stairs? There are also composite options for those accessories!

4. Sustainability

If you’re going green and are weary of environmental protection, the composite decks are also great for you! As we’ve mentioned before, most of the decks are made up of recycled parts of both wood and plastics. Some examples of the plastics used in the decks come from old shopping bags and the sleeves remaining off of newspapers. Although it’s not 100% natural, composite decks are making every attempt to be sustainable by using old plastic rather than creating new plastic.

5. Value

If you look at the cost of composite decking compared to natural decking, this seems like a poor choice to make. If you consider all the advantages of this decking in terms of its appearance, its maintenance needs and durability, you will see it has more long term value. You save on both time and maintenance costs if you go with the more expensive decking in the long run.

All in all, composite decking is still relatively new, but we’ve seen its popularity grow quite a bit in the last 5 years. It’s not something we consider unusual to see anymore, and it looks a lot cleaner and rich in comparison to natural decking options. Keep your deck looking like day 1 everyday of the year. Let us know your thoughts on composite decking and if you have it already, or plan to make the switch when you decide to add or remodel a deck at your residence.
