You bought a house, you got a lot of space, but you also have a lot of things. You’re moving in all your stuff, or maybe you haven’t bought the place yet, but there’s one thing you haven't decided on yet. What to do with that spare bedroom. It’s been there, it's sitting around and part of you wants to look elsewhere with one less room to save some cash, the other part of you knows you want that spare. But for what? Let’s go over some ideas for that extra room in your home!
There’s a TON we could do with a spare bedroom, but we want to narrow it down to a simple list of 5 today, we want to hit on 5 different areas that the room could go to, some for creative use while others tackle conventional uses. Let’s jump into it!
Creative Space
Home Office
Game/Toy Room
Guest Bedroom/AirBnB
Walk-In Closet
1. Creative Space
We’ve all got passions, hobbies, interests. The sad truth about having them is, a lot of us don’t pursue them or have the time. Imagine having a private space to tackle these passions, and gets you to actually chase them. A creative space is a great opportunity for you to have private space in your home to chase your passon, and also motivate you to a higher degree, if it’s all set up, now you have no excuses to start! This space can be used for any creativity, it could be your home studio for music, or just a general practice room. You could set up drop cloths and make it a painting room for your passion in art! There’s so much space to do whatever you want in here. Our suggestion is to keep it strictly to one or two hobbies, if you add anything extra you’ll be juggling way too much in there!
2. Home Office
You’re young, bright, with a massive vision to do something outside the 9 to 5. You work all day at your job, but you’re really thinking about the business you want to start on your own. Maybe that’s not entirely the case, maybe you work from home! Whatever the situation is, a home office would be a great investment to set up in that empty room! Being able to close a door and get away from distractions of the TV, the nice smelling food in the kitchen and everything else that takes your mind off work and onto the couch will totally disappear when you create this space for the grind. Office space from home is a great way to maintain efficiency for your work from home, or to pursue a dream of yours.
3. Game/Toy Room
Looking for a place to kick back and relax? You turn on the gaming system in the living room, and your significant other is telling you they wanted to watch TV. Where are you supposed to go to the game? Maybe the situation is the kids want to watch something or they’re making a racket next to you. That extra room? allocate it as a gaming room or a kids playroom or toy room! This is an awesome idea for that spare room, you can keep toys and videogames all in one place, maybe even stack your collection up on the walls. Get creative with it, if you’re a major fan of a gaming series you can paint the walls a certain theme, and same goes for if it's the kids room, get some wall stickers of their favorite shows, get creative, this room is built around fun!
4. Guest Bedroom/AirBnB
Do you consider yourself a great host, or maybe you’re just the coolest cat on the block? You’ve got friends and family constantly visiting your place, and in some cases they’re coming from a long ways away. Making this room into a guest bedroom would be a great situation to allow friends and family to sleep. Now you’ve become the ultimate host. Or have you? Now it’s not as busy and your friends and family have visited on their once a year trip out, and the rest of the year it sits. You have prime real estate and live in a busy area, if you’re up for it, you can use this room as an investment! You can rent out the room to AirBnB! For those who are unfamiliar with the website, it’s an online hosting site where people can rent out rooms, apartments, and second homes to buyers for a duration of time. It’s a great way to capitalize on your spare room, especially if there’s access from the outside! Things to think about if you host a lot of guests and are alright with allowing someone into your home for a short stay for a trade of cash.
5. Walk-In Closet
Last but not least, this use of the room might be a bit over the top for some, but it may also be needed. A walk in closet, like those sweet ones you see on those tv shows or movies. Now downscale that and simplify. This room doesn't need to be glamorous or decked out, it can be simple with a few portable hanging racks and good use of the current closet the room more than likely has. Clear out your master bedroom or place your business only fits into the spare bedroom. Keep your outfits orderly and ready to go in this room, it’s not one for everyone, but there are some that could make great use of this idea.
Outside of this list, there are a lot of other ways you can use a spare bedroom. We are just pointing out the ones we think are the most beneficial or most creative. In the end the decision is yours, but we hope we inspired you to find what works best for your empty room. The last thing we want to see happen with your space is allow it to become storage, stray away from that (in my opinion it just tells me your hoard too much stuff). Thanks for reading along on our spare room journey, comment below on what you plan to use your spare room for, or if you already use it for something, let us know what!
